These are 5 Oldest Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren) in Indonesia

As a majority muslim country, Indonesia has a lot count of Islamic education institutions. The oldest one is called as ‘Pesantren’; which is an Islamic boarding school where students meet teacher for studying Islamic subjects in intellectual and spiritual methods. The students are called as ‘Santri’ and teacher as ‘Kiai’. Their place called as ‘Pondok Pesantren’ which means; ‘a dormitory where students stay’.

These are five oldest pesantrens which had been established for hundred of years in Indonesia and still exist until now. Check this out;

1. PESANTREN SIDOGIRI, PASURUAN, EAST JAVA

There are two versions of this pesantren birth year; 1718 and 1745. The last version is assigned as pesantren’s anniversary. The average amount of students of this pesantren is about 5.063 boys and 5.137 girls. This pesantren also has other education institutions branches, which are 113 madrasahs (Islamic schools) around Pasuruan.

2. PESANTREN JAMSAREN, SOLO, CENTRAL JAVA


This pesantren established in 1750 and located in Veteran Street, Serengan, Solo, Central Java. This pesantren started from a little mosque in te age of Pakubuwono IV (king of Kraton Solo). In that time, Pakubuwono IV invited many ‘ulama (muslim scholars) to educate the society, one of them was Kiai Jamsari from Banyumas. Lately, the kiai’s original name is used to call the pesantren. For 5 years (1830-1878), this pesantren was in vacuum era because of colonial aggression. With Prince Diponegoro, the late Kiai Jamsari II (son of Kiai Jamsari) fight against Dutch colonialists and caused the pesantren activities became vacuum. In this pesantren, there are 2.000 students and 160 muqim (students who stay in pesantren).

3. PESANTREN GADING, MALANG, EAST JAVA


In 1768, KH (Kiai Haji) Hasan Munadi established a pesantren in Gading village, Klojeng, Malang regency. He died in 125 years old and leaded this pesantren for about 90 years. After his death, the pesantren is leaded by his son, KH Isma’il, until 50 years. The third generation’s leader, KH Mohammad Yahya, named this pesantren as ‘Miftahul Huda’ which is Arabic means; ‘key of guidance’. He allowed the santri to learn sciences in schools out of pesantren, this was a brave decision in that time.

4. PESANTREN BUNTET, CIREBON, WEST JAVA

The literatures revealed that this pesantren was built in 1758 by Kiai Muqayim. Early, he gave Qur’anic education for society in Dawuan Sela village. The location was a simple building which had several rooms made from bamboo for the wall and thatch for the roof. By time, this humbly building became a big pesantren with a huge amount of students. This pesantren had been a pioneer of other pesantrens in West Java and Jakarta. Many alumnus of this pesantren spreaded around those areas and established their own pesantrens.

5. PESANTREN BANYUANYAR, PAMEKASAN, MADURA ISLAND

This pesantren originated from a little mosque built by Kiai Itsbat Ishaq in 1787. He was a charismatic spiritual figure with modesty and wisdom had educated many spiritual muslim figures in Java and Madura island. The name ‘Banyuanyar’ which means ‘new water’ is originated from a tale of Kiai Itsbat. He founded a new spring in that area with continously neer ending water flow. Until now, that spring is still used by pesantren to fulfill their daily need. There are 4.323 students in this pesantren which are 3.211 boys and 1.112 girls. They came from various areas of Indonesia, such as Madura, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), and Sumatera.
