As a majority muslim country, Indonesia has a lot count of Islamic education institutions. The oldest one is called as ‘Pesantren’; an Islamic boarding school where students meet teacher for studying subjects in intellectual and spiritual methods. The students are called as ‘Santri’ and teacher as ‘Kiai’. The place called as ‘Pondok Pesantren’ which means; ‘a boarding place where students stay’.

1. PONDOK PESANTREN SIDOGIRI, PASURUAN, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Sidogiri was established in 1718 in Sidogiri, Pasuruan regency, East Java province, Indonesia. Pesantren Sidogiri is one of most famous and impressive pesantren because of several aspects; (a) it is an old pesantren which still exist and progressive, (b) still maintain traditional method in learning process with thousands stundents, (c) known as financially independent pesantren by hold many business branches as entrepreneurship action.

2. PONDOK PESANTREN LANGITAN, TUBAN, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Langitan was established in 1852 in Langitan, Tuban regency, East Java province, Indonesia. This pesantren has wide influence along Surabaya areas in East Java, from Gresik, Lamongan, Tuban, Bojonegoro, until Cepu. The late master of this pesantren, KH (Kiai Haji) Abdullah Faqih, is a charismatic figure whom well known in political domain of Indonesia. 3. PONDOK PESANTREN MODERN GONTOR, PONOROGO, EAST JAVA


Pondok Modern Gontor was established in 1926 in Gontor, Ponorogo, East Java province, Indonesia. Pondok Modern Gontor is a pioneer and innoator of modern pesantren which is influenced by Islamic education modernization of Syed Ahmad Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim University India. This pesantren’s modern style influence type of students, many of them are urban people who want to learn Islamic education in modern way. Characteristic of this modern pesantren is strict dicipline, ability to speak in Arabic and English as daily languages, and cleanliness of uniform when learn at class. 4. PONDOK PESANTREN TEBUIRENG, JOMBANG, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Tebuireng was established in 1899 in Tebuireng, Cukir village, Jombang regency, East Java province, Indonesia. The founder of Pesantren Tebuireng is one of Indonesia national charismatic figure, who is KH Hasyim Asy’ari. He is one of the founding fathers of Nahdlatul Ulama, a biggest muslim non-politic organization in Indonesia. His son, KH Abdul Wahid Hasyim, was a first minister of religion of Indonesia, and his grandson, KH Abdurrahman Wahid, was a fourth president of Indonesia. Pesantren Tebuireng not only still maintain the classical method in traditional dormitory, but also apply modern method in school classes.

5. PONDOK PESANTREN AL-KHAIRAAT PALU, DONGGALA, CENTRAL SULAWESI (CELEBES)


Pesantren Al-Khairaat was established in 1930 in Palu, Donggala, Central Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. This is the most famous and influencial pesantren in east Indonesia. The founding father, Habib Idrus bin Salim al-Jufri, made this pesantren as a centre of Islamic civilization in east Indonesia. The character of this pesantren is combination of traditional learning method and modern management. Here, students not only learn about Islamic subjects such as interpretation of holy Quran and understanding Hadith (Prophet’s words), but also fathom religious music, dance, and martial arts. 6. PONDOK PESANTREN NURUL JADID PAITON, PROBOLINGGO, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton was established in 1950 in Karanganyar, Paiton, Probolinggo regency, East Java province, Indonesia. This pesantren had complete set of formal education institutions, from kindergarten, elementary school, secondary school, high school, until college of information technology and college of health. Of course, there are still maintain the main character of pesantren which is Islamic subjects mastery, such as tahfidh (memorizing holy Qur’an), madrasah diniyah (primary school of religion), and ma’had ‘aly (college of religion).

7. PONDOK PESANTREN AL-MUNAWWIR KRAPYAK, YOGYAKARTA


Pesantren Al-Munawwir Krapyak was established in 1911 in Krapyak, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Early, this pesantren was focused to educate the memorizers of Holy Qur’an. The founding father of this pesantren, KH Muhammad Munawwir, was a great scholar who become a main chain in transmission tradition of Qur’anic learning in Indonesia. This pesantren developed to accommodate other Islamic subjects such as Islamic jurisprudence, history, astronomy, interpretation, and else. 8. PONDOK PESANTREN LIRBOYO, KEDIRI, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Lirboyo was established in 1910 in Lirboyo, Kediri, East Java, Indonesia. This is one of the largest traditional pesantren in Indonesia. This traditional character lead the students to mastering classic references of Islamic subjects. In Pesantren Lirboyo, there are three main figures of pesantren founding and developing, those are KH Abdul Karim the founding father with his sons in law; KH Marzuqi Dahlan and KH Mahrus Ali. There are thousands students stayed in dormitories of this pesantren, they came from various islands in Indonesia and other Asia countries. 9. PONDOK PESANTREN SURYALAYA, TASIKMALAYA, WEST JAVA


Pesantren Suryalaya was established in 1905 in Suryalaya, Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Kiai Abdullah Mubarak, better known as Abah Sepuh (sunda, means; the old father), was the founding father of this most significant of pesantren which was started by enrollment of ten students. Today, under the charismatic Abah Anom (his son), the school boasts an average yearly enrollment of 1.200, with students coming from Bandung, Jakarta, Palembang and as far away as Malaysia. The Pesantren Suryalaya also has branches on other Indonesian islands, and centers throughout Southeast Asia. Beside guiding students in Islamic subjects, Abah Anom also guide a thariqat (spiritual order) in Qadiri Naqshabandi order. This pesantren also serve therapy for drugs addicted people by physical and spiritual exercises.

10. PONDOK PESANTREN TEGALREJO, MAGELANG, CENTRAL JAVA


Pesantren Tegalrejo was established in 1944 in Tegalrejo, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. Kiai Chudlori was the founding father of this pesantren which is known as ‘Asrama Pendidikan Islam’ (Islamic Education Dormitory) with 1.300 students live there. Every room contain 30 to 40 santri who come from same region. Whole students there come to 1.300 even more. This pesantren accompanied religion values with tradition and local culture. Every year, this pesantren stage a cultural week with civil market where there are many art performances, bands, dances, and many more.

11. PONDOK PESANTREN TREMAS, PACITAN, EAST JAVA


Pesantren Tremas was established in 1830 in Tremas, Pacitan regency, East Java, Indonesia. The founding father, KH Abdul Mannan Dipamenggala, early held a small circle for Islamic teaching for people in Semanten village, then moved to Tremas village. This pesantren was famous in Arabic gramatical sciences which attracted many students from other pesantrens to study there. There are many kiai who have their own pesantrens are alumnus of Pesantren Tremas.

12. PONDOK PESANTREN AL-HIKMAH BENDA, BREBES, CENTRAL JAVA


Pesantren Al-Hikmah Benda was firstly established in 1911 in Benda, Brebes, Central Java, Indonesia, by KH Kholil Mahalli after returned from his intellectual journey in Pesantren Mangkang Semarang. He found that Benda people were astern in Islamic knowledges. So he decided to teach those people home by home, and made his own home as a base of teaching and as dormitoriy for the students who want to stay. This was embryo of the pesantren which then be inaugurated in 1927 by KH Suhaimi Abdul Ghoni, nephew of the late KH Kholil Mahalli. Today, with up to 2.000 students live in the dormitories, Pesantren Al-Hikmah Benda not only hold classical teaching in Qur’an and Islamic jurisprudence studies, but also carry out formal schools, courses, and business entities in order to develop society welfare by increase teir grade of religion, education, culture, and economy.
